HOW TO GET TO BOCAS
There are several options depending on where you are coming from. Choose the option that best suits your travels.
AIRPLANE FROM PANAMA CITY
If you are flying in from another country, your best bet is to fly into Panama City and take either a plane from Panama City directly to Bocas or to take the 10 hours bus trip.
If you would like to have our travel agent help you with your national or international flight reservations, you can email to Servitur in Panama City at servitur@pty.com. They speak both English and Spanish and generally will return your email within an hour.
There are two companies that fly from the domestic airport (Albrook) in Panama City:
Air Panama and
Aeroperlas. Both companies are quite similar and offer 2 flights a day. Consult their web site to know the flight schedule.
The cost of the ticket (one way) is approx. $110.00 (no discounts for round-trip), and the flight time is approx. 1 hr. Both companies have a weight limit on checked baggage. You are allowed approx. 20 pounds per person. Anything over that is subject to extra charge.
AIRPLANE FROM COSTA RICA
Nature Air flies to Bocas from the domestic airport of San José, Costa Rica. The company offers 3 flights a week. Consult the web site of Nature Air to know the flight schedule.
The cost of the ticket is approx. $ 150.00 (one way) and the flight time is 1 hr.
BUS FROM PANAMA
Wherever you are in Panama, it is most likely possible to catch a bus in the direction of Bocas del Toro.
Almirante is the coastal town you are trying to reach. There are direct buses that leave from Panama city, as well as, cheaper, indirect buses that first leave you off in David and then on to Almirante. The price difference is quite large with the direct bus costing around $25.00 and the indirect buses totaling around $18.00. The larger price gets you to Almirante in a few less hours and with air-conditioning and comfortable seats.
BUS FROM COSTA RICA
Buses from San Jose, Costa Rica, run directly to the Panama border. All of the buses must run through the town of Bri Bri where buses leave regularly for the 1 hour road trip to the border. If you can't decide which bus to take, getting to Bri Bri first will always allow you to get to the border.
At the border, there are two ways to go to Changuinola, the next step in your trip. There is a bus stop just to the left and down the hill from the Panamanian immigration office where you can catch a bus or a waiting taxi. From Changuinola terminal you can catch another bus, leaving every 15 minutes, to the coastal town of Almirante ($1.20), or a taxi (between $ 12.00 and $ 15.00).
There is also a direct trip: a bus (Transporte Bocatoreno) that leaves from San José at 9:00 am (Costa Rica time) daily and, crossing the border, arrives to Changuinola at 4:00 pm local time.
ONCE IN ALMIRANTE
Once in Almirante the marine taxis are just at steps of the road! Take the half-hour boat ride ($4.00) and you are in Bocas.
